Scaling Tips
Spices & seasonings
When doubling, start with 1.5x spice amount and taste-adjust.
Baking powder & soda
Scale exactly — leavening ratios are critical for baking.
Cooking time
Larger batches may need slightly longer cooking, but not proportionally.
Pan size
Doubling a recipe may need a larger pan — check depth stays similar.
Eggs
Round to whole eggs. For half an egg, whisk and measure half.
Salt
Scale conservatively — add less, then taste.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does recipe scaling work?

The calculator multiplies each ingredient by the ratio of desired servings to original servings. If a recipe serves 4 and you need 6: multiply each ingredient by 6/4 = 1.5. So 2 cups of flour becomes 3 cups. The calculator handles this for every ingredient simultaneously and converts fractions to practical measurements.

Can I scale a recipe from 4 servings to 1?

Yes — divide each ingredient by 4 (scaling factor 0.25). 1 cup becomes 1/4 cup. 2 tablespoons becomes 1.5 teaspoons. The calculator automatically converts to the most practical measurement unit so you do not end up with awkward quantities like 0.25 cups when 4 tablespoons is clearer.

Do all ingredients scale proportionally?

Most ingredients scale proportionally, but some need adjustment. Salt and spices: start with 75% of the calculated amount when scaling up (you can add more to taste). Baking powder/soda: scale proportionally for up to 2x; beyond that, increase by only 75%. Cooking fats: scale proportionally for most recipes.

How does the calculator handle fractions?

The calculator works with fractions naturally — 2/3 cup scaled by 1.5 becomes 1 cup (not 0.999... cups). Results are shown as practical kitchen fractions (1/4, 1/3, 1/2, 2/3, 3/4) rather than decimal measurements. When a fraction does not simplify neatly, the nearest practical equivalent is shown.

Can I enter ingredients in different measurement systems?

Yes — enter ingredients in cups, tablespoons, teaspoons, ounces, grams, milliliters, or any unit. The calculator scales each ingredient in its original unit. You can also toggle a unit conversion option that shows the scaled amounts in both metric and US customary units simultaneously.
