How do I add fractions with different denominators?
Find the least common denominator (LCD), convert both fractions to equivalent fractions with the LCD, then add the numerators. Example: 1/3 + 1/4. LCD = 12. 1/3 = 4/12; 1/4 = 3/12. 4/12 + 3/12 = 7/12. This calculator shows each step automatically.
How do I multiply fractions?
Multiply the numerators together and the denominators together, then simplify. Example: 2/3 × 3/4 = (2×3)/(3×4) = 6/12. Simplify by dividing both by GCD 6: 6/12 = 1/2. For mixed numbers, convert to improper fractions first.
How do I divide fractions?
Multiply the first fraction by the reciprocal (flip) of the second fraction. "Keep, Change, Flip": keep the first fraction, change division to multiplication, flip the second fraction. Example: 3/4 ÷ 2/5 = 3/4 × 5/2 = 15/8 = 1 7/8.
How do I convert a mixed number to an improper fraction?
Multiply the whole number by the denominator, add the numerator, and keep the same denominator. Example: 2 3/4 = (2×4 + 3)/4 = 11/4. To go back: divide numerator by denominator. 11 ÷ 4 = 2 remainder 3, so 11/4 = 2 3/4.
