Frequently Asked Questions

What is my IP address?

Your IP address is a unique numerical label assigned to your device by your ISP when you connect to the internet. This tool shows your public IP address — the address visible to websites, servers, and services you connect to. Your local (private) IP address (like 192.168.x.x) is different and only visible within your home network.

What is the difference between IPv4 and IPv6?

IPv4 addresses look like 192.168.1.1 — four numbers (0–255) separated by dots, giving about 4.3 billion unique addresses. IPv6 addresses are longer (e.g. 2001:0db8:85a3::8a2e:0370:7334) and provide a virtually unlimited address space. IPv6 was created because the world ran out of IPv4 addresses. Most modern devices support both.

Can my IP address reveal my exact home address?

No. Your IP address can reveal your approximate city, region, country, and ISP — but not your street address, floor, or apartment. Precise physical location requires GPS or permission to access your device's location data. IP geolocation databases are accurate to the city level roughly 80% of the time.

Does a VPN change my IP address?

Yes — a VPN (Virtual Private Network) routes your traffic through a VPN server, making websites see the VPN server's IP address instead of yours. This tool will show the VPN server's IP when connected. VPNs are commonly used for privacy, accessing geo-restricted content, and securing connections on public Wi-Fi.
