Tipping norms vary by country. In the US, 15% is the minimum for acceptable service, 18–20% is standard for good service, and 20–25% for excellent. In the UK and Australia, 10–15% is common but not always expected. In Japan, South Korea, and much of Southeast Asia, tipping is not customary and can even cause offence.

Most etiquette guides suggest tipping on the pre-tax subtotal, since the server didn't provide the tax service. However, tipping on the total bill is widely practised and simpler. The difference is small — on a $100 pre-tax bill with 8% tax, tipping 20% on pre-tax is $20 vs $21.60 on post-tax.

This calculator splits the total (including tip) evenly. For uneven splits, calculate the total bill with tip first to get the tip percentage, then apply that same percentage to each person's individual subtotal separately.

For taxis in the US, $1–2 per bag or 15–20% of the fare is standard. For Uber and Lyft, 15–20% is appreciated for good service, long trips, or help with luggage. This calculator accepts any tip percentage — just enter your fare as the bill amount.

US hotel tipping guidelines: housekeeping $2–5 per night (leave daily with a note), bellhop $1–2 per bag, concierge $5–20 for significant assistance, room service 15–20% if a gratuity charge is not already included on the bill. Always check if a service charge has been added before tipping extra.
