Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate VAT on a price?

To add VAT to a net price: multiply by (1 + VAT rate). Example: £100 net + 20% VAT = £100 × 1.20 = £120 gross. To remove VAT from a gross price (reverse VAT): divide by (1 + VAT rate). Example: £120 ÷ 1.20 = £100 net. The VAT amount is always Gross − Net.

What is the standard VAT rate in the UK?

The standard UK VAT rate is 20%, applied to most goods and services. A reduced rate of 5% applies to domestic fuel, children's car seats, and energy-saving materials. Zero-rate (0%) applies to most food, children's clothing, books, and printed matter. Some items are VAT-exempt entirely, such as insurance and financial services.

What is the difference between VAT and GST?

VAT (Value Added Tax) and GST (Goods and Services Tax) are functionally the same type of consumption tax. VAT is the term in Europe and the UK. GST is used in Australia (10%), Canada (5% federal + provincial), India (multi-tier), and New Zealand (15%). This calculator works for any — just enter the applicable rate.

What does VAT inclusive vs VAT exclusive mean?

A VAT-exclusive (net) price does not include VAT — tax is added at checkout. A VAT-inclusive (gross) price already contains the VAT, which is common in retail. When a UK shop displays £120 for a product with 20% VAT, £20 of that is VAT and £100 is the net price.

How do I calculate VAT for multiple items?

Sum all item net prices first, then apply VAT to the total — this gives the same result as calculating VAT on each item individually. Enter the combined total into the net price field and this calculator instantly shows the VAT amount and gross price.
