Pace Calculator
Calculate running or walking pace, time, and distance.
Frequently Asked Questions
How is pace calculated?
Pace = Total Time / Distance. If you run 5 miles in 40 minutes, your pace is 8:00 per mile. Alternatively, if you know your pace and distance, Time = Pace x Distance. The calculator accepts any two inputs and computes the third. You can switch between minutes per mile and minutes per kilometer.
What is a good running pace?
It depends on fitness level and distance. Beginner 5K: 10-12 min/mile. Intermediate 5K: 8-10 min/mile. Advanced 5K: 6-8 min/mile. Marathon: add 1-2 min/mile to 5K pace. Walking: 15-20 min/mile is typical. The most important thing is consistency and gradual improvement rather than hitting a specific number.
How do I convert between min/mile and min/km?
Multiply min/mile by 0.6214 to get min/km, or multiply min/km by 1.6093 to get min/mile. An 8:00 min/mile pace equals approximately 4:58 min/km. The calculator handles both units and converts between them automatically.
What does the split time table show?
The split table shows your expected time at each mile or kilometer marker based on your pace. For a 5K at 8:00/mile pace: mile 1 at 8:00, mile 2 at 16:00, mile 3 at 24:00, finish (3.1 mi) at 24:51. This helps you plan your race strategy and check if you are on pace during the event.
How does pace relate to speed?
Pace (time per distance) is the inverse of speed (distance per time). 8:00/mile = 7.5 mph. 5:00/km = 12 km/h. Runners prefer pace because it directly relates to training targets, while speed is more intuitive for cycling and general reference. The calculator shows both values.
