No — it's a common myth with no scientific basis. Dogs age rapidly in their first two years (a 1-year-old dog is equivalent to ~15 human years) and more slowly after. The rate also differs dramatically by breed size: giant breeds (Great Danes) age faster and have shorter lifespans; small breeds (Chihuahuas) age more slowly and live longer.

A 2021 veterinary consensus: Year 1 ≈ 15 human years, Year 2 adds ~9 more (total 24), then each subsequent year ≈ 4 human years. A 5-year-old cat ≈ 36 human years. A 10-year-old cat ≈ 56. The oldest verified cat (Creme Puff) lived to 38 years — equivalent to about 168 human years.

Tortoises are among the longest-lived animals on Earth. Jonathan, a Seychelles giant tortoise born around 1832, was still alive as of 2024 at ~191 years. A 100-year-old tortoise is effectively middle-aged. The tortoise age slider in this calculator goes up to 200 years to accommodate documented lifespans.

Parrot lifespans vary hugely by species. Budgerigars/budgies live 8–10 years. Cockatiels: 15–20 years. African Grey parrots: 40–60 years. Macaws: 50–80 years. Cookie, a Major Mitchell's cockatoo, lived to 83 at Chicago's Brookfield Zoo — the oldest verified parrot on record.

Hamsters have a very compressed lifespan of 2–3 years due to their fast metabolism. They pack a full life cycle — birth, growth, reproduction, aging — into a very short time. A 1-year-old hamster is roughly equivalent to a 25-year-old human; a 2-year-old is equivalent to about 50.
