Frequently Asked Questions
How is GPA calculated?
Weighted GPA = Σ(grade points × credit hours) ÷ total credit hours. Grade point values: A = 4.0, A− = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, B = 3.0, B− = 2.7, C+ = 2.3, C = 2.0, D = 1.0, F = 0.0. Example: A in a 3-credit course = 12 grade points; B in a 4-credit course = 12 points. Total 28 points ÷ 7 credits = 4.0 GPA.
What GPA do I need for graduate school or honours?
Latin honours typically: Cum Laude 3.5+, Magna Cum Laude 3.7+, Summa Cum Laude 3.9+. Graduate school requirements vary: most programmes want 3.0+ minimum, competitive programmes want 3.5+. Medical school: AAMC average acceptance GPA is ~3.7. Law school: top schools expect 3.8+.
How do I raise a low GPA?
GPA is a weighted average — recent grades have less impact if you've completed many credits. To raise from 2.5 to 3.0 after 60 credits, you'd need roughly a 3.5 average for the next 60 credits. Focus on high-credit courses for maximum impact. Some schools offer grade replacement for retaken courses.
What is the difference between semester GPA and cumulative GPA?
Semester GPA reflects only your current term's performance. Cumulative GPA is the weighted average of all semesters combined. Cumulative GPA is what appears on transcripts and is used by employers and graduate schools. A strong semester can meaningfully raise a low cumulative GPA over time.
