Frequently Asked Questions
What is CGPA and how is it calculated?
CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) is the weighted average of all grade points earned across all semesters. Formula: sum of (grade points x credit hours) divided by total credit hours. For example, an A (4.0) in a 3-credit course and a B (3.0) in a 4-credit course: (4.0 x 3 + 3.0 x 4) / (3 + 4) = 24/7 = 3.43 CGPA.
What GPA scale does this use?
The calculator defaults to the standard US 4.0 scale (A=4.0, B=3.0, C=2.0, D=1.0, F=0.0) with plus/minus variations (A-=3.7, B+=3.3, etc.). You can switch to 5.0, 7.0, 10.0, or percentage-based scales used by different countries and institutions. Custom grade-to-point mappings are also supported.
Can I calculate semester GPA separately?
Yes — enter courses grouped by semester to see both individual semester GPAs and the cumulative GPA across all semesters. This helps you track your academic progress over time and identify which semesters pulled your CGPA up or down.
How do credit hours affect my GPA?
Credit hours weight each course's impact on your GPA. A 4-credit course counts twice as much as a 2-credit course. An A in a 1-credit elective barely moves your GPA, while a C in a 4-credit major course has a significant impact. Higher-credit courses are worth prioritizing for GPA improvement.
Can I plan future courses to reach a target GPA?
Yes — use the "what-if" feature to add hypothetical future courses with expected grades. The calculator shows what your CGPA would be if you achieve those grades. This helps you plan your course load strategically and set realistic grade targets for the coming semester.
