Frequently Asked Questions

How do weighted grades work?

Weighted grades multiply each assignment's score by its weight (importance). If homework is 30% and tests are 70% of your grade, a 90 on homework and 80 on tests gives: (90 x 0.30) + (80 x 0.70) = 27 + 56 = 83. Weights must add up to 100% for accurate results. This calculator handles all the math automatically.

What if my weights don't add up to 100%?

If weights total less than 100% (e.g., some categories haven't been graded yet), the calculator can either use the raw weights or normalize them to 100%. Normalizing gives you a current estimated grade based on completed work. The raw calculation shows your grade assuming 0 on ungraded categories.

Can I add extra credit?

Yes — add extra credit as a separate row with its point value and weight. Extra credit points are added on top of the regular weighted total, potentially pushing your grade above 100%. The calculator handles extra credit correctly without affecting the base weight distribution.

How do I plan what grades I need on remaining assignments?

Enter your current scores and then use the "target grade" feature. Set your desired final grade and the calculator shows the minimum score you need on remaining assignments to reach that goal. This is invaluable for prioritizing study time near the end of a semester.

Can I calculate grades for multiple categories?

Yes — add as many grade categories as your course has: homework, quizzes, midterms, finals, participation, projects, labs, etc. Each category has its own weight percentage. Within each category, you can enter individual assignment scores that are averaged before weighting.
