Frequently Asked Questions

How does the final grade calculator work?

The formula is: Required Final Score = (Target Grade - Current Grade x (1 - Final Weight)) / Final Weight. For example, if your current grade is 85%, the final is worth 30%, and you want a 90%: (90 - 85 x 0.70) / 0.30 = (90 - 59.5) / 0.30 = 101.7%. This tells you that you need over 100% — an A might not be achievable.

What if the calculator says I need over 100%?

If the required score exceeds 100%, you cannot reach your target grade even with a perfect final. Lower your target or check if extra credit is available. The calculator shows this clearly and suggests the highest grade you can realistically achieve given your current standing and the final exam weight.

What does "final weight" mean?

Final weight is the percentage your final exam contributes to the overall course grade. Common weights are 20-40%. If your syllabus says "Final Exam: 25% of course grade," enter 25. The remaining 75% is your current grade from all other coursework combined.

Can I see what I need for different letter grades?

Yes — the calculator shows the required final exam score for each standard letter grade threshold (A: 90+, B: 80+, C: 70+, D: 60+). This lets you quickly assess your realistic options and set an appropriate study target without calculating each scenario manually.

What if I have multiple remaining assignments plus a final?

If you have several remaining graded items, combine their total weight and treat them as a group. Alternatively, use the full Grade Calculator tool which handles multiple weighted categories and what-if scenarios for any number of remaining assignments.
